5 Tips to Boost Your Speed in Guitar Picking

file7771347947139Finger picking or plucking in guitar is a method in guitar where you use your thumb or other finger to pluck the strings rather than strumming it to make a sound. Increasing the speed of your finger picking will make your playing flexible and giving you style’s in playing. In this post, I will share you tips on increasing the speed of your guitar picking that I learned in attending guitar classes in Abu Dhabi.

Here are the tips you should try:

  1. Don’t be eager in practicing your plucking in fast mode. You should practice slow first until you master it then it will be easy for you to adjust in fast mode.
  2. You don’t need to be tense in playing faster. In practicing to play faster your finger get tenser. Tense slows down the speed of your playing, so you need to relax your muscles.
  3. When you perfectly master practicing the slow, it is the time you need to practice in fast mode. Use a device like metronome to measure your beats per minute. When you know your average BPM try to exceed your limits. But remember, you need to practice slow to make your playing accurate and clear while practicing fast is for speed.
  4. Observe your playing every practice. Know what fingers are weak and doesn’t work the way you want it. Create an exercise for those fingers to make them work.
  5. Keep on practicing. Practicing one whole day doesn’t mean you increase your speed. You need a regular practice, sometimes it takes weeks or months to improve your speed. Give yourself a 15 minutes daily practice. Again it’s about how you practice not how much you practice.
